Fujifilm XH2S Firmware Update: Is the Video Autofocus working?

Firmware Update Observations

Since updating to firmware version 7.0 on my Fujifilm XH2S, paired with the XF-18mm F1.4 lens, I've observed increased hunting in autofocus. This is particularly concerning as this lens features linear motors, known for their fast and precise focusing capabilities. For my tests, I used AF-C with human eye tracking mode, maintaining the focus sensitivity at 2, and using white tracking to ensure consistent focus.

Simple Test: Head Movement

For the first test, I sat down and moved my head slightly to see if the camera could keep up with the changes. I conducted this test at three different apertures: F4, F2.8, and F1.4.

  • At F4: The tracking was mostly successful, with minimal hunting.

  • At F2.8: Some hunting began to appear, which is concerning for such a basic test.

  • At F1.4: The hunting became more pronounced, even with minimal head movement.

Additionally, I noticed that wearing glasses exacerbated the issue, causing the autofocus to become more hesitant and delayed.

Simple Test: Distance Variation

For the second test, I moved my head closer and further away from the camera, again at different apertures.

  • At F4: The camera maintained focus without much hunting.

  • At F2.8: Hunting started to become noticeable.

  • At F1.4: The camera struggled significantly, with frequent hunting.

This test highlighted that even with the fast 18mm F1.4 lens, the camera had difficulty maintaining focus at close distances.

Conclusions and Implications

These simple tests revealed that the firmware update may indeed be affecting the autofocus performance of the Fujifilm XH2S. While other brands handle similar situations with ease, the XH2S struggled, especially at wider apertures. This is particularly frustrating given the camera's price point and expectations of professional-level performance and the fact that at the same price point, currently you have cameras like the Nikon Z6III with internal RAW which focus way better. What do you think? Have you seen the same problems on your side?
