FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR – The Perfect Portrait Lens?

As a portrait photographer and videographer in Japan, I am always on the lookout for the perfect lens to enhance my craft. The FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR has piqued my interest, and after 3 months of extensive use, I can confidently share my thoughts on this impressive optic.

FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR - Size, Weight & Handling

The FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR is a chunky lens, weighing in at 445g. While it might feel substantial in hand, especially for those used to lighter lenses, it’s relatively lightweight compared to full-frame DSLR equivalents. The minimalist design, typical of Fujifilm, is clean and functional with no switches or large buttons. The lens features two rings: a larger manual focusing ring with a satisfying resistance for precise adjustments, and a smaller aperture ring marked from f/1.2 to f/16. The aperture ring can be set to “A” (Automatic) by pushing a button, preventing accidental changes during shoots.

One handling quirk to note is the lens hood. When attached in reverse for storage, it covers the aperture ring, making it difficult to access without removing the hood. This can be a bit of a nuisance if you prefer to keep the hood on the lens when not in use.

Build Quality

This lens exudes quality. With 11 aperture blades, it produces perfectly circular bokeh, which is essential for stunning portrait shots. The 'WR' in its name stands for weather resistance, and the lens boasts nine rubber seals to protect against moisture and dust, making it ideal for outdoor use. Its maximum magnification is 0.14x, and a close-focusing distance of 0.5m allows for capturing macro-type subjects like flowers. However, it lacks optical image stabilization, a trade-off that keeps the lens size manageable.

FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR Autofocus

Autofocus is where the FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR shows some limitations. It’s not the fastest, which can be frustrating in fast-paced scenarios like weddings. The time taken to refocus, especially from close to distant subjects, might mean missing a crucial shot. However, for slower-moving subjects like couples walking, the autofocus performs well. It's not ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects, such as people running or sports.

That said, this lens is definitely better than the previous version. While it’s not as fast as the 33mmf1.4 WR, it’s noticeably faster than the older 56mmf1.2, offering an improved experience for those upgrading.

Additionally, the autofocus mechanism is audible, with noticeable whirring sounds. This can be a drawback in quiet settings, but it’s not a huge deal for most videographers who typically capture audio externally. Using an external microphone can effectively mitigate the noise issue, ensuring that the autofocus sound does not interfere with your recordings.

Image Quality

Despite some autofocus issues, the image quality of this lens is outstanding. Shooting at f/1.2, there’s virtually no vignetting. Even without automatic lens profile corrections, vignetting is minimal and can add a pleasing effect to your photos. The 11 aperture blades ensure beautifully rounded bokeh, with a natural focus drop-off. Distortion is non-existent, and chromatic aberration is completely absent, even in high-contrast conditions. Additionally, lens flare is well controlled, ensuring that your images maintain clarity and contrast even when shooting against strong light sources.

The combination of compression, sharpness, and bokeh makes the images pop and look truly stunning. This lens delivers a remarkable depth and dimension to portrait shots, making subjects stand out beautifully against softly blurred backgrounds.

FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR Video Performance

For videography, the lens performs well, though the focus noise and slower autofocus can be drawbacks. Using an external microphone can mitigate the noise issue. Despite these concerns, the lens captures high-quality video with beautiful depth of field, making it a solid choice for portrait videographers.

Price

At $999, the FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR commands a premium price. While this might seem steep, the lens delivers stunning, sharp imagery with beautiful bokeh, making it a worthwhile investment for dedicated portrait photographers and videographers.

Conclusion

The FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR is a formidable portrait lens, capable of producing breathtaking images with exceptional bokeh. It's an excellent addition to the kit of anyone who shoots portraits, weddings, or events. The weather-sealing adds flexibility for outdoor shoots in various conditions. However, the slow autofocus and focus noise might be a concern for some professionals, especially in fast-paced or quiet environments.

Despite these drawbacks, if you value the ultra-wide aperture, weather resistance, and the tactile feel of the aperture ring, the FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR is worth considering. While there are more affordable alternatives from brands like Sigma, this lens offers a unique combination of features and quality that justifies its price for serious photographers.

In conclusion, the FUJIFILM XF56mmf1.2 R WR stands out as a near-perfect portrait lens, balancing exceptional image quality with robust build and handling characteristics. It has become one of my go-to lenses for portrait sessions, offering reliability and stunning results, making it a valuable tool in any portrait photographer's arsenal.
